Plate: Photo Calorie Counter ("Plate") is an app for iPhone and Android that estimates the calories and nutrients in photos of your meals. It is published by arephan, the developer name of Han Kim, an independent developer in Quebec, Canada. On Google Play the app is com.hankimproduction.plate; on the App Store it is app id 6817326918.
Your profile (goal, height, weight, age range), your meal log, meal photos and weigh-ins are stored only on your device. We do not run accounts and cannot see this data.
When you scan a meal, the photo, your device language and region, and a random install identifier are sent to our server so that Google's Gemini model on Google Cloud Vertex AI can estimate the dish and its nutrition. The photo is processed in memory and is not stored by us. Google processes it under its Cloud terms and does not use it to train its models. The install identifier is used only to enforce daily limits and is kept for 30 days.
If you connect Apple Health, the app reads your sleep, heart, activity, workout, weight and logged caffeine, water and mindful minutes to fill the widgets on the Body dashboard. It only reads, it never writes to Apple Health, and these readings are worked out and kept on your phone.
The Body dashboard has widgets that are written by AI. They stay off until you turn them on in the app, and you can turn them off again in Dashboard Settings at any time. While they are on, the app sends a short summary of your recent numbers to our server a few times a day so that Google's Gemini model on Google Cloud Vertex AI can write the widgets. The summary holds figures such as how long you slept and your usual range, your resting heart rate, steps, workouts, weight change, and the calories, protein, times and dish names of meals you logged, together with your device language and region, your weight goal (lose, hold or gain) and the random install identifier. It does not hold your name, email, date of birth, location, photos or the raw records from Apple Health.
You can dictate or type notes in the app about how you feel and what is going on. Dictation uses Apple's speech recognition on your iPhone, on the device where your language supports it; where it does not, Apple processes the audio under its own privacy policy. We never receive audio. The notes are stored only on your phone. If AI widgets are on, the words of your recent notes (the text only, up to eight notes from the last two weeks) are sent with the summary above so the widgets can take what you said into account. If AI widgets are off, your notes never leave your phone. A note you delete is removed from your phone and is not included in any later request.
The summary and the note text are processed in memory to write the reply and are not stored or logged by us; Google processes them under its Cloud terms and does not use them to train its models. We keep only a daily count per install identifier, for 30 days, to enforce a daily limit. Information from Apple Health and from your notes is never used for advertising and is never sold. The widgets are general wellness information, not medical advice, and are not a substitute for professional help.
The iPhone app sends anonymous usage events (app opens, paywall views and purchase results) to PostHog so we can see where the app breaks. These events carry a random identifier, are not linked to your identity and contain no photos, meals or body measurements. The Android app does not send usage analytics.
Subscriptions are handled by Apple on iPhone and by Google Play on Android. We receive no payment details.
Settings → Erase All Data removes everything Plate stores on your device. Deleting the app does the same. Turning AI widgets off removes the AI-written text kept on your phone; nothing from it is kept on our server. Voice notes are deleted one by one in the app, or all at once with Erase All Data.
